Bringing out the Best

Year 2

Welcome to the Year 2 page here at Highlees. In Year 2 we have three classes. One taught by Mrs Freeman, one taught by Mrs Yates and Mrs Powell and the other, taught by Mr Robson.

Remember: The Year 2 school day will now be from 8:40 a.m. - 3:10 p.m.

In year 2, we work hard to become independent learners with a love of learning. We develop problem solving skills, work cooperatively in pairs and small groups and try our best in everything we do! As part of being independent learners, children have the opportunity to be a variety of monitors within the classroom. On the first day of school, school and class expectations will be set out by the class teacher which will cover everything from behaviour to work presentation. Children will be given a login for Times Table Rockstars and Numbots which will help with mental maths and fluency. Each Wednesday, children will be given weekly homework and spellings to complete at home, which will be due back the following Monday. Phonics will be taught and practised daily in class as well as reading.

PE sessions will be on a Monday and a Friday. Children will need to come to school in their PE kit on these days. They will need to ensure they are not wearing earrings and that long hair is tied up on the designated PE days. Please ensure that your child wears their PE kit to school on PE days as they will not be getting changed prior to the lesson. PE kits must consists of a white t-shirt, black, navy or grey shorts or jogging bottoms/leggings and suitable footwear such as trainers or plimsolls. This is an important part of our school curriculum and we encourage all children to take part. As per our behaviour policy, children will receive praise and be able to participate in fun activities throughout the term. The children, as a class, will also be able to work towards an end of term treat/activity.

Reading: Children are expected to be responsible for bringing in their reading diaries and books when they need to be changed. Reading book change days are on a Monday and Thursday. They will need to hand in their reading records for checking, along with changing books.  We will continue with the 10 minute pledge, where we promise to read 10 minutes to your child every day - with you reading with them for another 10 minutes.

Spellings and Homework: Spelling words will be sent out each Friday. Please help your child to learn to spell these words. They will be tested on these words every Wednesday. Homework will be handed out on a Friday and will be due in the following Wednesday.
