Writing at Highlees
At Highlees, our writing journey is carefully planned, taking into account the purpose and audience we are writing for. To ensure our children feel inspired their writing journey is linked to their current topics, high quality texts and engaging experiences. Teachers ensure they expose the children to high quality examples and a wide variety of genres, allowing them to build on text specific knowledge.
There is a strong emphasis on developing speaking, listening and vocabulary development. Talk for writing and Drama for writing are used successfully across the school to help children discuss, formulae and express their ideas fluently before putting pen to paper.
Phonics plays an intrinsic part in the development of early writing within EYFS and Key Stage 1. Early marking is valued and celebrated.
Children are taught both discrete grammar, punctuation and spelling skills as well as this being integrated within the writing process.
At Highlees, we have high expectations of all children . From mark making in EYFS to extend writing across the curriculum, we ensure that the teaching of writing is engaging and a developmental process.
